CLARA MARIE GOTTHARDT
Mr. Troy Burwell
Speaker for Aggie Advertising Club
Initially going into this Aggie Advertising Club meeting I had no idea what to expect; we were required to wear business casual dress and this was something totally new for me. Never in my life have I ever had a club meeting with such structure and class. It was refreshing to know that the people that I will be meeting in my college career are successful business men and women who want to share their experiences so that I can grow to one day be successful as well. So to start off the meeting my senior peer leader, Julia Gaas, got up in front of the entire club and started going over important dates and events coming up for their club. She spoke with so much confidence and excitement in her voice that no matter what she said I was interested to learn about what her club had to offer. I learned from her that presentations are all on how we present our selves, if we look nice, are confident, and know our information we will be able to be successful. No matter what we say those 3 things will help us as speakers to better communicate with our audience, and in the end successfully be able to get our points across. I have looked up to Ms. Julia ever since I first met her because her professionalism is always showing. She always has a smile on her face, the answer to any question, and she treats everyone around her with respect. She never looked down on me when I needed help on assignments that were new to me instead she helped me through so that I could be as successful as I could possibly be.
After Ms. Gaas talked to the group they welcomed our first speaker up to the stage, his name was Troy Burwell. The very first point that he made was the explanation about the #1 myth about advertisement which was, “Content is King”. This statement makes the assumption that whatever content we use when trying to advertise our products is the most important part. This is a false statement, the correct version of this statement would be “Content is NOT King”. Content is simply the entertainment or the experience that a person has while watching or reading your advertisement. So after hearing Mr. Burwell say this I started to wonder what was the most important part about advertising to your customers. I’m not going to lie and say that I didn’t think that content was the most important thing because I did, but Mr. Burwell quickly supported himself in saying that advertising is all about being able to connect with people. Sure the experience is that part that lasts, the part that people remember, but if we as advertisers aren’t able to connect with the people we are trying to reach through our advertisement then the ad was a waste of time. So in my opinion one of the most important things that Mr. Burwell said was that “ALL advertising starts with the consumer”, we have to engage our clients before they even consider buying from us. When a client watches a video that briefly explains and outlines what your product is, it engages them and draws them in instead of trying to force our products directly upon people.
Advertising is no where near what it used to be, instead we have to continue to learn new ways on how to best get our information out there for people to see. The changes in technology have definitely caused the change in advertising to change more quickly due to the fact that new phones, computers, and TV’s view ads in different ways. But as the advertiser we have to keep up with these new trends in order to understand how best to reach people. Mr. Burwell then ended his speech with these specific directions on how to be successful in advertising. He said, “It all starts will the consumer, and ends with the consumer.” There isn’t anything in between that really means anything other than the fact that content is NOT King.
