CLARA MARIE GOTTHARDT
Act Ethically
Defined:
The ability of a person to perform in a professional and respectable manor at all times is a person's ability to use their ethics to help them make decisions. It is how we know right from wrong, and without the ability to act ethically we would be unable to appropriately handle difficult situations.

Reflections:

When I think about ethics I start to reflect on decisions that I have made for myself in the past. I know for a fact that in my life ethics has everything to do with how I make my choices. I'm not saying that I am perfect by any means, because that's not true. But it is true that when I have made the wrong decision I knew what I was doing, it wasn't just some accident.
Business ethics are slightly different though, in the work place we are required to make dozens of important decisions everyday. Although at times when we have deadlines to meet, and people counting on us to make the right choice; we don't always realize that we are taking ethics into account. When we put a business situation into our ethical views, we don't allow things to cloud our judgment. Instead we can focus on the long-term affects and how these things not only can effect our companies, but our consumers as well.
Ethics is not any easy topic to explain because everything about it isn't just black and white. Some decisions are the most difficult choices that we will ever have to make in our lives, but we have to make them anyways. Sometimes things don't work out exactly how we want, but it is how we deal with these situations that truly shows how we act. Whether we are built on strong ethics that influence us to try and do the right thing at all times; or if we fall short to taking the easy route and not worrying about the effects that our decisions can have on other people. I don't know which category you find your self leaning towards, but in my life I always try and put my ethics and the ethics of others first when making my decisions in life and in business.
